Italy Holiday and Oasis of the Seas Adventure

Get ready for a whirlwind adventure combining the rich history of Rome with the luxurious indulgence of a Royal Caribbean cruise! This July, we are embarking on a trip to Italy that is over 30 years in the making.  At 45 days out we can officially check in to Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas.  To get our choice of check-in times we will check in at 12:01 am on the 45th day prior to our sailing date.  During our experience we will be exploring ancient wonders and endless buffets. Join us as we navigate cobblestone streets, explore iconic landmarks, and set sail for a week of relaxation on the high seas.

Roman Rendezvous

Our journey begins in South Florida on Delta Airlines (booked thru Expedia), soaring towards the Eternal City. After a brief layover in Atlanta, we touch down in Rome, eager to soak up its timeless beauty. A pre-arranged car whisks us away from the airport to our luxurious home for the next few days – Hotel Nazionale Roma.

Albergo Nazionale in Italy

Steeped in history and boasting a central location, this hotel serves as the perfect launching point for our Roman exploration. First on the agenda is the Vatican, a treasure trove of art, architecture, and spiritual significance. With a pre-booked tour, we’ll bypass the long lines and delve into the Sistine Chapel’s breathtaking frescoes and the grandeur of St. Peter’s Basilica (which does not require a ticket).

No Roman adventure is complete without a visit to the Colosseum, the iconic amphitheater that once witnessed gladiatorial battles and chariot races. A guided tour will bring the Colosseum’s history to life, allowing us to imagine the roar of the crowds and the drama that unfolded within its walls.

After a day packed with history, we’ll savor a delicious Italian dinner (restaurant to be determined!), savoring fresh pasta, local wines, and the warm Italian atmosphere. Exhausted but exhilarated, we’ll return to our hotel, ready to dream of Roman chariots and Renaissance masterpieces.

Train, Transfer, and Oasis Awaits

Bidding farewell to Rome, we’ll board a train to Civitavecchia, the port city where our magnificent vessel awaits – the Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas! A quick shuttle ride connects us to this floating paradise, a marvel of modern engineering and design.

Embarkation day is a whirlwind of activity, from collecting our stateroom keys to familiarizing ourselves with the seemingly endless array of restaurants, bars, and entertainment options onboard. With a balcony stateroom booked, we’ll have a private haven to relax and enjoy breathtaking ocean views.

Seven Seas of Bliss

The itinerary for the cruise is still under construction, as we haven’t booked our day trip in Barcelona, but with ports of call in Naples, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, La Spezia, and more, the possibilities are endless! Excursions booked include a visit to the Pompeii archaeological site, a chance to marvel at the mysterious Drach Caves in Palma de Mallorca, and a tour that encompasses the best of Pisa and Florence.

Of course, there will also be plenty of time for pure relaxation. Imagine lounging by the pool with a refreshing drink, indulging in the ship’s world-class spa treatments, or catching a captivating show in the onboard theater. Those who enjoy food as much as we do will be in paradise with a seemingly endless array of restaurants to choose from, each offering a unique culinary experience.

Sorrento Sunshine

After a week of island hopping and onboard adventures, our cruise comes to an end in Civitavecchia. But wait, the Italian adventure isn’t over yet! We’ll disembark and head to the charming seaside town of Sorrento for a relaxing and picturesque finale.

Set on cliffs overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, Sorrento offers a slower pace and a chance to truly soak up the Italian way of life. Our stay is at Hotel La Tonnarella, a beautiful hotel that will be our home base for exploring the town and surrounding areas.

Più Avventure Italiane (More Italian Adventures)

With a few days in Sorrento, we can explore the town’s narrow streets lined with shops and cafes, savor delicious local cuisine, and soak up the breathtaking views. A day trip to Pompeii, the ancient Roman city frozen in time by volcanic ash, is a must-do. We might also consider venturing to Amalfi or Positano, other gems along the Amalfi Coast. Ferry’s are easy and not expensive.

A Reluctant Arrivederci

All too soon, our Italian adventure comes to a close. With a heart full of memories and a suitcase overflowing with souvenirs, we’ll head back to the airport for our return flight home. But as we say “arrivederci” to Italy, we know we’ll be back someday to explore more of this endlessly fascinating country.

Stay tuned for future posts!

This blog is just the beginning! Throughout the trip, we will be sure to capture the essence of Italy.  More to follow.
